Army 81 Div Investigates Death Of Police Officer In Lagos

The Nigerian Army, 81 Div, has commenced investigations into the purported killing of a police officer by one of its soldiers.

The development is contained in in a statement issued by the division's Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Lt Col Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni.

The incident, which occurred on 9 October 2024 when the said soldier allegedly shot and killed the policeman following a disagreement over an alleged traffic rule violation.

The statement noted that the regrettable incident is being investigated with a view to reassuring the general public that the army is very committed to its code of conduct and rules of engagement.

"The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has since been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and further disciplinary procedures.

"The incident is highly regrettable, given the Division’s commitment to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. The Nigerian Army has continuously sensitized its personnel not to engage in activities that would tarnish its image and bridge the trust with other security agencies as well as the civil populace.

"The General Officer Commanding 81 Division NA commiserates with the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Police on this unfortunate incident."

The Div assured the general public will not only conduct a thorough investigation but also appropriate disciplinary measures against the soldier if found culpable. It added that the Div will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure security of lives and property in line with the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army
