Sanwo-Olu Commissions GAC Motor Assembly Plant, Lagos Ride
*Hails the initiative as one that optimizes technology for safety and comfort.
Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, has commissioned the GAC Car Assembly Plant, in the Ikeja area of the state.
The commissioning, which also include the roll out of the plant's first 2,000 vehicles, including the 1,000 cars for the Lagos Ride initiative, took place at the GAC Motor's plot 38A location, Wemco Road, Ogba-Ikeja.
It would be recalled that the Lagos state government and CIG Motors Company Limited, makers of the GAC brand, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, at the peak of Covid 19 pandemic. However, the Joint Venture Agreement, JVA, was executed in March 2021.
Among others, the agreement was to establish the GAC Motor Nigeria, Completely Knocked Down, CKD, factory in Ogba and also the LAGRIDE project, to produce 1, 000 brand new GAC cars for smart taxi in Lagos.
Whereas the assembly plant was launched at the GAC location in Ikeja, the Lagos Ride initiative, a car-hailing scheme described by the governor as one that optimizes technology for safety and offers alternative for comfort’, was launched at the State House, Marina.
It is expected to help ease the transportation challenge across the state.
