Relentless Battle Rages in Bakhmut
Agency reports say fierce battle is ongoing in eastern Ukraine

Early Monday reports from the eastern Donetsk region of bakhmut say Ukrainian forces are contending with relentless attacks from Russian forces. The reports also say the battle which pitches both adversaries against themselves across a small river that separates the ruined town and now serves as the front line, is said to have resulted mounting casualty figures on both sides which has not been independently confirmed.
Reuters reports, quoting Ukranian Commander, Colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi, say prevailing situation in the nearly deserted town is very difficult, adding however, that his forces were repelling all Russian attempts to capture it.
"All enemy attempts to capture the town are repelled by artillery, tanks, and other firepower," Colonel general Syrskyi said.
The reports notes that Ukrainian forces control the west end of Bakhmut, Russia's Wagner mercenary group controls most of the eastern part, a situation already confirmed by British intelligence.
Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin also confirmed the seriousness of the battle on Sunday, describing the situation as "tough, very tough".
He however, noted that his forces are advancing on the city despite the setback.
"The closer we are to the centre of the city, the harder the fighting ... The Ukrainians throw in endless reserves. But we are advancing and we will be advancing," Prigozhin said in comments released by his press service.
