BRICS Marks Historic Foreign Literature Library Day

OMOARELOJIE Ernest, Abuja.

BRICS a conglomerate of emerging economies in global south, has launched its first foreign literature library day at its summit held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, Russia, east of the picturesque Ural mountains.

The Foreign Literature Library was held under the auspices of "Inostranka", Russia’s leading center for promoting global culture, advancing Russian culture abroad, and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

Described as the foundation for what would become the largest intergovernmental association, the event took place at the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Center, as a joint project of the Foreign Literature Library and the TV BRICS International Media Network.

Among others, the event featured an expert roundtable discussion titled "BRICS Dialogue: Multifaceted Cooperation as the Basis of a Multipolar World."

Several dignitaries attended the global event, including Russia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey A. Ryabkov; Deputy Head of Rossotrudestvo, the Russian federal agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs and International Humanitarian Cooperation, Pavel A. Shevtsov, and a host of experts from leading cultural and educational institutions specializing in BRICS affairs.

With discussions centres around the need for Cultural and ideological affinity among BRICS nations, the theme serves as a fundamental reminder on the need to strengthen collaboration across various fields.

The roundtable, according to the group, also serves as a platform for discussing pressing issues and future prospects in culture, education, economics, and information exchange, all of which are within the framework of reinforcing a multipolar world order.

The event was rounded off with a vibrant concert that featured performances by musical and dance ensembles, as well as poetry recitations in the languages of the BRICS+ countries.

BRICS is a global organization established to foster and strengthen economic, political, and social cooperation among member nations, as well as increasing the influence of Global South countries in international governance. Comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, all of which are emerging economies, with Nigeria currently a partner member, having keyed into the group mandate in January 2025.

However, the group's meteoric expansion and influence on global issues have outstripped that of more developed markets recently.
