Damagun, others plot to create lingering constitutional crisis in PDP, says Fabiyi

A stakeholder of the Peoples Democratic party ,and a member of the PDP Young Generation Caucus , Fabiyi Oladimeji has revealed that the gathering storm in the Peoples Democratic Party will further exacerbate as all plans have been concluded for Damagun to stay put as the Acting National Chairman of the party against the majority and popular wishes of the party members.
Fabiyi noted that Damagun will ensure that the rescheduled NEC meeting of 28th November, 2024 never holds, but if the pressure becomes too much, and the meeting eventually holds, Damagun will make sure that NEC did not remove him by introducing bottlenecks that will make it impossible for his removal.
"The constitution of the party provided that when a National Chairman resigns or vacate office before the expiration of his tenure due one reason or the other , the deputy from his zone takes over as acting National Chairman."
The same constitution also provided that the NEC has the power to appoint a replacement meaning that the constitution empowers only NEC to decide the replacement of a National Chairman.
Even Damagun as acting National Charman understands that his continued occupation of the position is unconstitutional, and as badly as he wanted to make it substantive , will require the ratification of the same NEC.
It is high time the critical stakeholders from the North East impressed and prevailed on Damagun to tow the line of honour and respect by steping down and revert to his original position.
The North Central in the same vein must as a matter of expedience present a unified replacement that will be accepted and embraced by all.
Let me also sound a note of caution to those who portray the happenings in the PDP as an Atiku and Wike diatribe to desist from doing so.
“What has brought us to this point is a culmination of deliberate actions of few greedy characters in the party. The issues at hand in the PDP is not about any individual; it is about the party and maintaining rules of the game,” Fabiyi noted.
He said further that, “those who are afraid of Atiku's towering stature should find something else to do. Party members and, indeed, Nigerians know those who are out by all means to kill the PDP for their selfish agenda.
“It is incontrovertible that Atiku remains the symbol of our democracy, not only of the PDP, but for the country as a whole. Democracy in Nigeria is fast collapsing, INEC has collapsed, the judiciary has also collapsed, all institutions that should be supporting our democracy are collapsing including the security agencies.
“The majority of the PDP members and leaders alike have found in Atiku, a man who can challenge the iron fist cruelty of the incumbent administration and rescue the country from the slide of bad leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“The crisis in the PDP is therefore along the lines of those who desire to make the party lay prostrate from performing is core role as a credible opposition party and those who desire to liberate the party and make the PDP earn the trust and confidence of the Nigerian people,” Fabiyi remarked.
