Ex-NEC Chairman, Professor Humphrey Nwosu Is Dead

Former head of the National Electoral Commission, NEC, Prof Humphrey Nwosu, is dead. Although no official statement is out about the development, reports say he died in an unnamed US hospital.

Prof Nwosu is renowned for heading the National Electoral Commission, NEC, set up by the Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida administration, to oversee the conduct of the 1993 general election.

The election, popularly referred to as the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, produced the late business mogul, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, MKO, candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, as the undeclared winner.

He defeated Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention, NRC. However, the election, widely adjudged as the freest and fairest in the country’s electoral history, was annulled by the military regime that conducted it.

Following the controversy that trailed the annulment and alleged threats to his life, Nwosu fled the country and went into exile in the United States where he has remained since then.

He was born on October 2, 1941
