Nigeria police demand retraction, apology from Amnesty International over protest report

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has formally called on Amnesty International to retract and apologise for a report titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on End Bad Governance Protests.”

The letter, dated January 6 and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the publication as damaging and misleading.

Amnesty International reported alleged human rights violations, excessive violence and police brutality during the August 2024 EndBadGovernance protests. The NPF, however, categorically denied these allegations, calling them baseless and unsupported by credible evidence.

“We have thoroughly reviewed the claims and can confidently assert that they are completely false,” the NPF stated, emphasising that officers acted with professionalism and minimal force while safeguarding peaceful protesters and arresting criminal elements.

The Force also provided media reports and other evidence to counter the allegations, reaffirming its adherence to global best practices.

Expressing concern over the publication’s impact, the NPF stated that the report undermines public trust and demoralises officers dedicated to ensuring law and order.

“Such falsehoods demoralise our officers who risk their lives daily to protect the public,” the letter said.

The NPF demanded Amnesty International issue a retraction and public apology within seven days, warning that failure to comply would compel the Force to explore legal options to protect its integrity.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and human rights, the NPF stated: “We will continue to serve with diligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights.”
