From, Omah Ngozi, Awka
The Anambra State High Court has adjourned the cases against five native doctors accused of criminal activities, including preparing Oke-ite, to April 11, 2025.
The court noted that the adjournment became necessary in order to allow for proper service and arraignment, as stated by Honourable Justice Jude Obiorah.
The defense counsel, Remigus Okoli, emphasized that proper service and adequate time for defense preparation are fundamental rights under the constitution and relevant state laws.
The Anambra State Government has confirmed that over 30 native doctors are in custody, with some facing prosecution under the new Anambra Homeland Security Law. This law prohibits certain traditional charms and criminalizes those involved in their preparation.
The native doctors, Onyebuchi Okocha, aka, Onyeka Jesus, Chiedozie Nwangwu, Akwa Okukuo, Ekene Igboekweze and Eke Hit, are accused of criminal activities, including preparing Oke-ite and other prohibited traditional charms.
Anambra State Government is cracking down on criminal elements hiding under cultural practices, aiming to create a safer society.
