Double Tragedy: Coaster Bus Crashes, Kills Man Heading to a Burial Ceremony

It was a case of double tragedy on Tuesday, March 26, 2025, when a coastal bus conveying 29 passengers crashed at at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK Junction, Awka, Anambra State.

The accident, which killed a 70 year old passenger also left 28 other passengers in critical conditions.

Eye witnesses told our correspondence that the coastal bus coming from Ogoja, Cross River state, enroute Abatete, Idemili North Council Area of Anambra state, lost control, struck another 18 seater bus before ending up in a ditch.

Occupants of the coastal bus, including the deceased, were said to be on their way to the burial ceremony of a member of their church, Dr Simon Ezego, said to be a Knight of the Catholic Church, when the accident occurred.

FreshNews also gathered from one of the survivors, Pastor Christian Ikere, that the accident occurred following a faulty break system which the vehicle developed even from the onset of the interstate journey. However, the driver reportedly ignored both the fault and pleas from the passengers to address the issue.

Another passenger, Mr. Chidiebere Chukwu, who confirmed the development, noted that the driver eventually lost control of the bus as a result of the same problem following which it collided with an inter-city commercial vehicle pickng passengers at the UNIZIK junction.

Whereas the deceased has been taken to the morgue, the injured are receiving treatment at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.
