NEMA Simulates Flood Disaster Exercises in Anambra

OMAH Ngozi, Awka.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has conducted a flood disaster simulation exercise in Anambra State's Okoti community.

The initiative, the agency disclosed, is aimed at equipping residents of flood-prone communities with the necessary knowledge and tools to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding.

While emphasizing public awareness, the agency stressed the importance of community preparedness early warnings and action to prevent loss of lives and property.

According to the agency, simulating flood disaster response became imperative in order to educate and prepare affected communities on emergency procedures and evacuation protocols.

NEMA is working to enhance early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms to minimize the impact of floods.

The exercise involved collaboration with stakeholders, including the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the military, and the Federal Fire Service.

Meanwhile, the agency also distributed relief materials to displaced persons, demonstrating its readiness to respond to flood emergencies.

Among others, it is equally collaborating with local communities to raise awareness about flood risks and promote preparedness measures.

As part of the simulation exercise, the agency identified 11 local government areas in the state said to be at the risk of flooding. They include Ogbaru and other communities in both Anambra East and West Council areas.
