Waldrum Quits Super Falcons' Job

”I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”

With the words above, Randy Waldrum, manager of the Nigerian senior female football team team, the Super Falcons, announced his resignation Thursday.

The development is contained in a a letter he transmitted to the football authorities.

The largely successful team lead, the weeks following the 2024 Paris Olympics were rather tasking for him and family as a result of issues relating to the health of his wife.

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that..."

Waldrum took over as Super Falcons manager about four years ago. He went on to lead the team to the semi-finals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, which held in Morocco.

He was also in charge when the team gave a sterling performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where the team wooed global fans with beautiful football play prior to being edged out of the tourney by England, via a round 16 penalty shootout.

The 67 year-old American had a topsy-turvy relationship with the Nigerian football authorities over alleged divided loyalties, prior to the Paris Olympics, so much so that barely a month to the expiration of his contract, there was no certainty over his place.

The uncertainty was further compounded when the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, appointed Justin Madugu in a Caretaker position to prosecute qualifying rounds of the Olympic Games and the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON. He however, took full managerial responsibilities before the competitions.
