Don't Go Near Correctional Centres, FG Warns Protesters

The Federal Government has sent a note of stern warning to organizers of the August 1-10 nationwide protest to steer participants away from all Correctional Centres across the country as they have been designated red zones.

Spokesman of agency, Abubakar Danlami Umar, delivered the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

The statement warned any person or group of persons without any germane business whatsoever at the various custodian centres across the country to steer clear as they have been designated as red zones. 

“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that the Custodial Centres have been designated as red zones; therefore, any person or group of persons who have no business whatsoever should steer clear," the statement said in part. 

The statement reiterated that as critical national assets with relevance to public safety, there is need to forestall all actions that tend to compromise their security.

It counseled all would-be protesters to consider the centres as no-go areas as violations would be met with dire consequences.

“Furthermore, the Service wishes to enjoin the public that Custodial and Non-custodial Centres are critical national assets which are germane to public safety as well as national security. Tampering with or attacking them will lead to a breakdown of law and order, and further exacerbate the security of the society in general.

“The Service strongly advises all members of the public to join hands with the Service to ensure the protection of correctional facilities,” the statement noted.
